We are reading a new novel set in 1095 and 1096, during the First, or People's, Crusade.
Start Up #5 today was a reading about this crusade and the reasons why people joined:
- Pope Urban II told them it was a holy war and the "right" thing to do
- They would be guaranteed place in heaven if they participated
- They faced poverty and starvation in Europe if they didn't go on a crusade (increased population meant very little land to go around and there were droughts and disease affecting crops negatively)
- For adventures, fighting, and travel
- Might "win" some treasures, lands, or other riches
- Wanted to "free" the Holy Land from the Muslims
