We started a poetry unit last week.
So far, you have been assigned
- a poetry title page ( 3 pictures and 10 words or term to do with poetry, eg. senses, emotions, imagery, word choice, simile, stanza, alliteration, metaphor, personification, ballad, song, couplet, irony, etc.)
- to read at least 20 poems on a wide variety of topics (humourous, teen issues, nature, sports, song lyrics, curricular connections or school subjects, emotions, story poems or poetic fiction, and more, if you can!). Complete the chart from the library periods.
- Choose a poem to present to the class (24 marks for eye contact, volume, pronunciation, stance, evidence of practice and enthusiasm/emotion). Create at least one visual that comes to mind from it. Presentations begin Thursday.
- Complete poetry terms 1 - 10 matching definitions sheet (simile, metaphor, alliteration, assonance, stanza, prose, verse, personification, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole). Practice using these terms and spotting them when you read.
Future assignments will include reading more poems, responding to them visually, orally and in writing, learning more terms (about 30 in total!), and writing many poems of your own.
Enjoy!
