New Mythology Unit

We read a creation myth from China called "Phan Ku" or "Bursting from the Hen's Egg". Above is yet another artist's vision of the giant. What was your image when we read the myth?

Your homework is to complete the first page of the "Mini Myth Response Book" and complete the mythology title page (3 pictures and 10 words). Half the page in the mini response book should be devoted to a written response and half the page to a visual response. Add colour.

Remember, good readers THINK about what they are reading before, during and after reading.
These response activities are designed so you can practice responding and becoming aware of your thoughts and reactions to literature. This should make you a better reader and make reading more enjoyable.

Responses can include such things as:

  • making predictions before reading
  • thinking of what you already know about the topic (eg. myths, China, eggs, etc),
  • making connections between the myth and other experiences you've had, things you've seen and heard, other myths, etc. eg. "This reminds me of..."
  • asking questions
  • giving your opinion with reasons to support it
  • telling how YOU think the earth was created
  • comparing and contrasting the different versions we heard and saw
  • noting unfamiliar words (and defining them) and/or appealing words and phrases
  • visualizations (draw pictures to represent what you're picturing as you read or listen)
